Driving in the dark

Rupert Wilson Shepley, West Yorkshire

SIR – Anyone who has driven in countries where cats’ eyes are not employed will know how fortunate we are to have them in this country.

On old main roads and motorways in Germany – where the white line surface markings are often worn away – it is hazardous to drive at night, especially in rain and poor visibility.

The suggestion that white lines should be removed from British roads (report, Issue 1,281) is insane.
