With economic turmoil looming, strikes on the increase across the postal service and railways, and fuel prices rocketing, it could hardly be a more fitting time to look back on 1978’s Winter of Discontent. One of the most serious and significant periods of political and industrial disruption in living memory, the crisis saw Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan flounder in the face of walkouts and mutiny. Whether Esther Rantzen, David Hamilton and Carole Malone are best placed to analyse said events is questionable, but it’s another lively, fast-paced Channel 5 overview. GT
