Will Smith’s first role since “slapgate” at the Oscars is inspired by the true story of a Louisana slave, who allowed American society to understand the evils of slavery when photographs of his bare back, covered in lacerations caused by whippings, were published in 1863. It’s a finely crafted, unflinching pursuit thriller in which the Deep South is portrayed as a manmade hell on Earth. It’s a tough watch, but Smith is terrific – dare we say Oscar-worthy?
