Director David Lynch catapulted Dennis Hopper back into Hollywood’s favour after a tricky hiatus. Hopper’s turn as psychotic criminal Frank Booth is extraordinarily violent, but with a mesmerising charm as well. Upon finding a severed ear near his home, our hero (Lynch’s Twin Peaks’ star Kyle MacLachlan) ends up in a suburban nightmare, and in love with a sensual Isabella Rossellini. It’s brilliantly unnerving.
