LITTLE AMERICA

Apple TV+

The US anthology drama series created by Lee Eisenberg, Emily V Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani is inspired by the true stories featured in Epic magazine, which has on its front page the legend: “Everyone here came from somewhere else”. These are quirky and inspiring tales of immigrants in America; it’s always done with a light touch, but they sometimes carry subtle political heft. (In a delicious irony, during the first series several actors were prevented from entering the US by President Donald Trump’s travel ban.)

The second series opener is Mr Song, about a South Korean immigrant family who run a hat shop in Detroit. The parents want their child, Luke (Ki Hong Lee), to be a doctor, but a chance meeting with local celebrity Martha Jean (Phylicia Rashad) changes the course of his life. He drops out of medical school to become a hat maker like his mother – and now is best known as the creator of Aretha Franklin’s striking headpiece at President Obama’s 2009 inauguration. A delightful tale; others in the series follow a Sri Lankan woman in a marathon car-kissing contest and a Somali chef preparing for the Minnesota State Fair. All eight episodes are available today.
