A soothing sanctuary

The bathroom is one of the ultimate sanctuaries and to create a sumptuous atmosphere, it’s important that it doesn’t feel too clinical. If space allows, include small items of furniture, antiques, patterned rugs, wall lights, paintings and wallpaper. If you opt for a freestanding bath, consider painting it a striking colour, and position it to have an interesting view.

I try to make the bathroom feel as cosy as possible. People tend to use far more tiles than they need – you require only enough above the bath and sink to protect the walls from water. For the countertops, wood makes a great alternative to ceramic or stone. In addition to a heated towel rail, underfloor heating helps to create a comforting feel.

Lights on either side of the mirror create a flattering glow, and a dimmable light will allow both a soft light that is ideal for a long soak and a brighter light required for cleaning.

If you need more storage, you can use wall-mounted cabinets and shelves.
