Some container tips
Go for a squat, rugged container with a wide base: one that won’t get blown over by winter winds. Whichford Pottery’s hand-thrown terracotta pots (which will outlast you) are excellent, and the company is offering free delivery on some items up until December 11 (whichfordpottery.com). Half-oak barrels also perform well
Don’t ‘plonk’ your star plant in the middle; place it to one side. It will look far more natural
Use variegation sparingly, and be aware that gold and green has a warmer feel than cooler cream and green. These two themes don’t mix well
Use a nutritious, peat-free compost such as Dalefoot’s wool-based potting compost, or Dobbie’s peat-free John Innes No 3
Place your container on pot feet, to aid drainage
