MORRISONS

BEST-VALUE WHITE:

Morrisons The Best Falanghina 2021, Benevento IGP, Italy

(13%, Morrisons, £7.50)

Falanghina is a white grape grown near Naples that smells of orange blossom and makes a refreshing winter wine.

At Morrisons I usually veer towards its own-label The Best branded wines. The Best range is strong on sherry – which is worth knowing at Christmas. Look out for The Best Oloroso Sherry NV, Spain (20%, Morrisons, £5.50 for 37.5cl), which is dry and tastes of dried figs and roasted hazelnuts. Also The Best

BEST-VALUE RED:

Cidade Branca 2021, Alentejo, Portugal

(14%, Morrisons, £7)

A cosy, unoaked red made from a blend of three grapes: alicante bouschet, touriga nacional and aragonez (aka tempranillo). Think of a warm glow of redcurrants and spiced strawberry pie with some dark fruit for ballast.

Pedro Ximenez NV, Spain (17%, Morrisons, £5.50 for 37.5cl) which is intensely sweet and tastes like black treacle and prunes. There’s also a buy more than six bottles, get 25 per cent off deal on in England and Wales until tomorrow, with a maximum of 12 promotional items per customer.

CHOICE CHRISTMAS FIZZ:

Morrisons The Best Crémant de Limoux NV, France

(12.5%, Morrisons, £11 or £8.25 on the 25 per cent off deal)

Sparkling wine made using the same method as champagne, but in the Pyrenees using the chardonnay, chenin and pinot noir grapes. This is refreshing, with some toasty notes, too.
