Nurse who said ‘do not resuscitate Tories’ faces sack

By Patrick Sawer and Max Stephens

A REGISTERED nurse has provoked a backlash after telling a television audience that Conservative voters do not deserve to be resuscitated by the NHS.

Miranda Hughes, who was a staff nurse before becoming a staff trainer in the health service, made the comments on Channel 5 – prompting angry calls for her to be suspended.

Ms Hughes, 46, told Britain on the Brink, presented by Jeremy Vine: “If you’ve voted Conservative, you do not deserve to be resuscitated by the NHS.”

As her comments were greeted by cries of disbelief by others in the live audience, she continued: “It’s harsh, but … it makes me so angry.”

She then added: “Of course, I would [resuscitate patients], but it’s appalling the way we’ve been treated.”

Anna Mcgovern, a former NSPCC and Childline ambassador, and winner of the Diana Award, said: “This nurse should never be allowed to work in a healthcare environment again.”

Ms Hughes said she will now lose her job with a south London private healthcare provider because of her remarks. She would not name her employer but said: “They can do that because of their media policy. I am not allowed to say anything. I’ve brought the company into disrepute so I’m being sacked.”
