While Ms Truss won over party members, she did not win over MPS, who preferred Rishi Sunak’s more cautious economic approach and who believe they have been vindicated by the turmoil of the past two weeks.

As well as Mr Sunak himself, they include such big names as Dominic Raab, the former foreign secretary, and Oliver Dowden, the former party chairman.

Many of them believe their ministerial careers are over and that they will either lose their seats or stand down at the next election, so they have little reason to show loyalty to Ms Truss.
