Dec 20 targeted for strikes that will paralyse NHS

By Daily Telegraph Reporter

THE NHS will be paralysed by coordinated strike action on Dec 20 under plans being discussed by union bosses, according to a report.

The day of action by nurses, ambulance workers and hospital staff would leave the NHS hanging by a thread as service levels will already be greatly reduced in the run-up to Christmas.

The Guardian reported last night that unions and government officials had been locked in intensive talks in the last few days over how to “avoid loss of life”.

No 10 has urged them to reconsider, citing the impact on patients. But the unions are demanding a pay offer in line with the rate of inflation, which is running at more than 11 per cent.

Three unions – GMB, Unite and Unison – are holding discussions on coordinated action. Confirmation of a date could come as early as tomorrow, according to the newspaper.

Consensus is forming around Dec 20 as it would bring down intense pressure on the NHS by stripping it of ambulance workers at the same time as the walkout of 100,000 nurses – who last week announced strike action for Dec 15 and 20. Health unions are obliged to ensure “life-preserving care” is maintained – but members say that ambulance staffing levels are already “far below” the normal standard required for safety.

The fresh threat from health unions comes as the Government yesterday urged rail unions to be “altruistic” and suspend strike action over Christmas and the New Year.

Members of the RMT working for Network Rail and the 14 train operating companies will strike on Dec 13-14 and 16-17, with a further two strikes on Jan 3-4 and 6-7.

Huw Merriman, the rail minister, said that strikes could “break” businesses at a crucial time of year for profits and called on the RMT to show the “spirit of compromise” and reach a deal with rail firms.

He told the Commons: “December for many companies is their time, it’s make or break time. We all have to think of this in an altruistic manner and see what more we can do. We will certainly do that on our side of the fence.”
