Labour councils to issue own speeding fines in 20mph zones

By Cameron Henderson

THREE Labour-run London councils could start issuing their own speeding fines to drivers following a pilot scheme introduced in Wandsworth.

Last month, Wandsworth Council, which is run by Labour, erected its own speed cameras for an eight-month programme to fine drivers who break the 20mph speed limit on two roads in the borough. Drivers caught speeding will be issued with a £130 penalty charge notice but will not be given points on their licence.

Now Lambeth, Hackney and Haringey councils have all stated an interest in introducing similar schemes.

Experts have dismissed the scheme as a revenue raising exercise. Nick Freeman, a leading motoring lawyer, said the scheme does little to improve road safety because fines are a “useless form of punishment”.

“Motorists are only bothered about endorsements, losing their license and rising insurance premiums – all these fines do is help the council’s finances,” he said.
