UK target to cut sugar in diets is ‘abject failure’

A Government target to cut sugar in food has been an “abject failure”, campaigners have said, after a delayed report revealed levels fell by just 3.5 per cent in five years.

The Sugar Reduction programme aimed to reduce the average sugar content of all UK food products by 20 per cent between 2015 and 2020.

It was one of the key commitments of the childhood obesity plan in 2016 and warned children were consuming “far too much sugar”.

The voluntary scheme “challenged” manufacturers to reduce overall sugar levels across products that contribute most to children’s sugar intake by “at least” 20 per cent by 2020.
