Thatcher’s handbag sold for over £8k at auction
She was famous for giving her political opponents a “handbagging”. Now one of Margaret Thatcher’s trusted “weapons” which she carried with her during her time as prime minister has sold for over £8,800 at Halls Auctioneers in Shrewsbury.
The grey shagreen leather handbag, made by the French fashion house Chaumet, is thought to date from the late 1980s. It has an 18-carat gold clasp and chain, with a cabochon sapphire. Inside is written in black ink ‘Grey dress bag’, probably by Baroness Thatcher herself.
