Burgers king of takeaways as fish suppers take a battering

By Patrick Sawer SENIOR NEWS REPORTER

BURGERS have become the country’s favourite takeaway dish, outstripping deliveries of curries and traditional fish and chips.

Data from the food delivery firm Deliveroo show that burgers have been the most delivered dish for six of the past 10 years.

The firm’s figures reveal how ubiquitous home delivery of food has become since it was launched 10 years ago this month, to be quickly followed by several rival companies.

While the American burger has consolidated its status as the go-to favourite, Deliveroo has also experienced a surge in home deliveries of previously less well-known food from around the world.

In 2017 the firm, founded by US born investment banker Will Shu, saw a rise in demand for Hawaiian cooking as poke – diced and marinated raw fish – became popular with British diners. Ukrainian, Polish, and Moroccan cuisines have been the fastestgrowing dishes on Deliveroo’s platform, with orders jumping 41 per cent in 2022.

Monica Rico Castrillo, of Lumina Intelligence, said: “Value and price are the biggest factors in ordering food, but beyond that convenience is everything.”
