CHRISTENING OF THE KING’S GRANDSON.

“GEORGE HENRY HUBERT.”

CEREMONY AT GOLDSBOROUGH FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. GOLDSBOROUGH, Sunday.

The infant son of Princess Mary and Viscount Lascelles and the first grandchild of the King was christened by the Archbishop of York in the parish church here today. The one tiny street of this sleepy little village had never before seen so many people, who came from all parts of Yorkshire, and by 11.30 numbered quite 8,000. From eight o’clock there was a constant influx of motorists and charabancs parties, and two spacious fields at the head of the village, which were used as motor parks, were filled by about 500 vehicles, including fifty charabancs. Colonel J. D. E. Coke, Chief Constable of the West Riding, had made elaborate preparations for coping with the traffic, and had placed several hundred policemen and special constables on duty. Prior to the service the crowd were unable to see the chief participants in the ceremony, because, as was expected, they entered the little grey stone church by way of the private door from the grounds of the Hall.

The usual morning service, with the special Psalms for Palm Sunday, was conducted by the Rector, the Rev. A. Hastings Kelk. Lord Lascelles was the first of the party from the Hall to arrive. He entered the church by the private door at 10.35, and when, a few moments later, the King and Queen, with their suite and Princess Mary, entered, he conducted them to their seats. The King and Queen, with Princess Mary between them, occupied the front pew to the right of the main aisle, and Lord Lascelles sat in the pew behind with members of his family. The house party, in addition to their Majesties, comprised Prince George, the Countess of Harewood, Lady Mary Trefusis (Lady in Waiting), Sir Bryan Godfrey-faussett (Equerry to the King), Viscountess Boyne (Lord Lascelles’s sister), Major the Hon. Edward and Mrs. Lascelles, Mrs. Maurice Lascelles, and Mr. and Mrs. Nigel Fitzroy. The Queen wore a long grey velvet cloak, with bands of moleskin, and a fuchsia toque with flowers to match. The King had a large white flower in his buttonhole. Princess Mary wore a grey frock, with a large sable cape and a grey lace hat.

The service opened with the singing of two verses of the National Anthem. Lord Lascelles, as is his custom when at Goldsborough, read both the lessons. The hymns sung were “Ride on, ride on in majesty,” “All glory, laud, and honour,” and, by special desire of the Queen, “Loving Shepherd of Thy sheep.” The Rector’s sermon was short, and at the close of it he said:

In a few moments we are to receive a new recruit into the army of the Lord. He is too young to know what will be done, but his sponsors will answer for him till he come of age to take that upon himself. He is to be stamped with the badge of His service, and we who represent the Church are to receive him into our ranks. Let us all pray that he may in the fulness of time confess to the faith in Christ crucified, and fight manfully under His banner against the sin of the world, the flesh, and the devil, and continue Christ’s faithful soldier and servant until his life’s end.
