HOW TO COPE: A FIVE-POINT PLAN

by Celia Dodd, Empty-nest expert

1

Acknowledge how you feel. This is a massive transition that affects everything from daily routines to your sense of identity

2

Remember that it’s entirely natural to feel the way you do, as well as other conflicting emotions. Talk to your partner and/or to an empathetic friend who won’t make light of it or say “Never mind, they’ll be back soon.”

3

Identify the time you miss your child most and find something new that gets you out of the house and stretches you in a new direction

4

Shift the focus of your life back to your own needs, interests and ambitions, which no doubt took second place when the kids were growing up

5

Remind yourself that although the empty nest feels like the end of an era, it’s also the beginning of a different kind of relationship with your child that will continue to change, grow and strengthen
