A BAKER’S (HALF) DOZEN TASTE-OFF

Marks & Spencer BEST VALUE

Contains yeast and is very sweet although it’s got more bounce than the Sainsbury’s loaf. The “authentic” crust is soft and disappointing. £1.60/450g (36p/100g)

Jason’s

Very malty – as it should be – though not much tang. It

has decent bounce. A cut above ordinary supermarket

bread. Great toasted. £1.60/450g (36p/100g) groceries.morrisons.com

Bertinet Bakery

A robust crumb. Bouncy without being rubbery, it’s

got a rounded, full flavour that develops and lasts. It’s

crust is soft and it needs toasting, as it is sliced, but it’s in a different league. £3.50/1kg (35p/100g)

Aldi

With a successful bounce plus a sour tang, this is in

the German tradition of closer textured rye. Toasts well. The white version is

quite beige (it’s got rye flour in), which may offend those who want a bright

white. £1.39/500g (28p/500g) aldi.co.uk

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference

Nice tang. Soft and sweet – like brioche in a sliced

white format. Contains yeast: I suspect the added sourdough is cosmetic. £1.35/800g (17p/100g)

Waitrose San Francisco Sourdough Style Bloomer

 Looking like a ciabatta, it’s

got a baguette-like crust and little salt. Doesn’t taste fresh – and sourdough ought to last. Yeasty

flavour at the end. £2.35/400g (59p/100g)
