Bubbly for astronauts will be out of this world

By Joe Pinkstone

THE world’s first space-proof bottle of champagne has been built by French experts.

Mai son Mumm, the Rheims winemaker, has created appellation d’origine controlée (AOC)-approved Cordon Rouge Stellar for spaceflight.

AOC, which restricts what can be called champagne, states that a bottle must be made of glass and have a mushroom cork.

The new 375ml bottle is inside an aeronautical-grade aluminium shell and has a long neck with a mushroom cork kept in with a steel ring.

A stainless steel stoppering mechanism inside the bottle controls the flow and is operated by pushing a button on the bottom of the bottle.

Pouring liquid is impossible in space, but the button allows liquid to escape and gather in a floating fizzy orb to be drunk by astronauts.

It will be sent to the Axiom Space Station, which is currently being built.
