First health worker dies in Ugandan Ebola crisis

A doctor has become the first health worker to die of a new vaccineresistant strain of Ebola in Uganda, its health minister said yesterday.

Dr Mohammed Ali, 37, tested positive for Ebola on Sept 26 and died while receiving treatment at a hospital in Fort Portal. Authorities in the east African nation announced the outbreak of the deadly fever on Sept 20, triggering fears of a health crisis in the country of 45million people.

The health ministry said on Friday that the disease had infected 35 people and killed seven.
