Today’s radio choice

Gerard O’Donovan

Now You’re Asking Radio 4, 7.15pm

Irish novelist Marian Keyes ( Last Chance Saloon, Watermelon) writes books that sell by the millions, and she brings the same qualities of naturalness, humour and a sure feel for what audiences will enjoy to this agony aunt-style podcast hosted with actress – and old friend from Dublin – Tara Flynn. The first series, in which they “inexpertly” but very entertainingly set out to talk through problems sent in by listeners, was an instant hit when it launched in January. Sensibly they don’t mess with the winning formula as they embark on a second run, their long-term friendship shining through wonderfully to listeners.

Drama on 3: Sizwe Banzi Is Dead Radio 3, 7.30pm

This award-winning black comedy, devised in 1972 by playwright Athol Fugard and actors John Kani and Winston Ntshona, brilliantly highlighted the absurdity and cruelty at the heart of South Africa’s apartheid system. It’s set in a photographic studio in Port Elizabeth where a man turns up wanting his portrait taken. Somewhat dated by the achievement of its political aims in the 1990s, the play still tingles with deeper social relevance. In this production, Sibusiso Mamba plays the man, Tonderai Monyevu is the photographer and Pauline Harris directs.
